This precursor to later "epic" 1970s disaster films presents 12 hours in the lives of the personnel and passengers at the "Lincoln Airport." Endless problems, professional and personal, are thrown at the various personnel responsible for the safe and proper administration of air traffic, airline management, and aviation at a major US airport. Take one severe snowstorm, add multiple schedules gone awry; one elderly Trans Global Airlines stowaway; shortages; an aging, meretricious pilot; unreasonable, peevish spouses; manpower issues, fuel problems, frozen runways; and equipment malfunctions, and you get just a sample of the obstacles faced by weary, disgruntled personnel and passengers at the Lincoln Airport. An airplane filled with V.I.P.s invited Mr. Philip Steven's grand opening of his art collection in Florida is hijacked when a trio knock out the passengers with gas and try to steal the priceless cargo of art treasures. But everything goes wrong for the hijackers when the low flying 747 clips an oil rig and crashes in the Bermuda Triangle. When the pilot of a small aircraft has a heart attack and crashes his plane into the cockpit of a Boeing 747, several members of the flight crew are killed and the pilot is blinded. Miraculously, the 747 stays in the air on auto-pilot with flight attendant Nancy Prior at the controls. Ground controllers, including her boyfriend Alan Murdock, try to teach her the basics but they soon realize they will have to get a trained pilot into the cockpit. Their first attempt fails and Murdock realizes he will have to do it. Teenage Amy Harper dates Buzz Dawson for the first time and they go to the carnival with their friends Richie and Liz. They smoke grass and have a good time visiting the attractions including a sideshow with freak animals. The silly Richie suggests the group to spend the night in the Funhouse for fun. During the night, they witness the murder of fortuneteller Madame Zena by a man wearing a Frankenstein mask from an opening in the ceiling of a room. They decide to leave the funhouse but all the exits are locked. Meanwhile, Richie sneaks into the room and steals the funhouse manager's money. The masked man returns with his father and owner of the funhouse to show the corpse of Madame Zena; when the man realizes that he had been robbed, he presses his son, who removes the mask and shows his horrible face. Richie starts and drops his lighter in the room. The owner asks his freak son to chase the thieves and eyewitnesses in a night of terror for the teenagers.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Funhouse (1981)

American based Federation World Airlines has just acquired a Concorde jet, which will make its inaugural commercial flight from Washington D.C. to Paris and then to Moscow as a goodwill gesture prior to the 1980 Olympic Games. Among those on board is Maggie Whelan, a television reporter, who is taking both legs of the trip. Just after boarding at Dulles International Airport, she receives documents conclusively and unequivocally stating that her boyfriend, Dr. Kevin Harrison, the Chairman of Harrison Industries, an aerospace contractor, is complicit of illegally selling arms to enemy regimes. Regardless, Maggie loves Kevin, who vows to do the right thing by making a public statement to his illegal activities. Maggie also intends on making an on-air report of the story once she arrives in Moscow. Kevin, however, has other thoughts. He plans on destroying the documents, the most convenient way being to bring down the Concorde with Maggie aboard, initially having the attack on the plane as a technical error, then pinning the attack on one of the many activist groups opposed to the Concorde itself or the upcoming Olympics. Concorde Captains Joe Petroni and Paul Metrand do whatever they have to to combat the attacks on the plane, the masterminds behind of which they nor Maggie are aware.—Huggo
