Dennis Pitt, now in young adulthood, has been conditionally released from the psychiatric hospital where he had been institutionalized for an incident that occurred when he was 15. Despite the doctors believing that he is rehabilitated because he no longer suffers from the fantasies that dominated his life, Dennis is still required to check in with his case officer, Morton Azenauer, once a week. Azenauer will do whatever he can to help Dennis survive in the outside world. A year after his release, Dennis violates the conditions of his release by moving without telling Azenauer, thus missing his weekly check-ins. He moves to Winslow, Massachusetts, where he has gotten a job at Sausenfeld Chemical Co. His boss Bud Munsch, the company, and his acquaintances in town are unaware of his history. In not being truly rehabilitated, Dennis believes the company is part of an alien conspiracy to poison the water supply, including openly discharging chemical waste into the lake next to the plant. Dennis spends much of his time gathering photographic evidence to support his belief. He also becomes infatuated with 17-year-old high-school student Sue Ann Stepanek at first sight. In his "investigative" work, Dennis is able to convince Sue Ann that he is a secret agent and co-opts the eager, admiring girl into his investigations as they begin a romantic relationship. But as Sue Ann deals with what she considers her repressed life, she, in her own slightly off-kilter mental state and using her relationship with Dennis, works toward her own agenda, leading to tragic consequences.—Huggo

David Armstrong comes from a wealthy family. They are both in love with the same woman, Sylvia. Her heart belongs to David but she doesn't let Jack know and plays along with his infatuation. Meanwhile, Jack's neighbour, Mary, is deeply in love with him but he just views her as a friend. WWI interrupts the romantic entanglements as Jack and David enlist in the US Army Air Service (Air Service of the AEF at the time). They are initially bitter enemies, due to them both vying for Sylvia's affections. Over time, however, they become very good friends. They are both posted to the same fighter squadron in France, where being a fighter pilot means every day could easily be your last.—grantss

In Paris, Italian Lisa Macklin tells her husband, American Bob Macklin, just before he heads off on a business trip to Casablanca that she plans to divorce him in she classifying their relationship as a nurse mother taking care of a spoiled little boy. Their problems are punctuated by his abuse of her, both physical and emotional. That divorce does not occur as his flight crashes in southwest France killing all on board. Three days after the funeral, Lisa discovers that Bob, ejected from the plane as it crashed, survived, he, slightly injured, able to make his way back to their apartment without detection. The reason for the secrecy is that he wants her to collect his life insurance for him after which he will leave her life, ostensibly giving her that "divorce" while he gets rich in the process. His plan is to hide out in their apartment until the money arrives. But one delay after another in the process leads to both Lisa and Bob having to endure their time together much longer than anticipated. The pressures that build up between them is only exacerbated by the possibility of someone detecting him in the apartment, and American David Barnes, new to the neighborhood, wanting to get to know newly "widowed" Lisa in an intimate sense.—Huggo
