Wessex County, England during the Victorian era. Christian values dominate what are social mores. These mores and her interactions with two men play a large part in what happens in the young life of peasant girl, the shy, innocent, proper yet proud Tess Durbeyfield. The first of these men is Alec d'Urberville. After learning from a local historian that they are really descendants of the aristocratic d'Urberville family which has died out due to lack of male heirs, Tess' parents send her to a nearby mansion where they know some d'Urbervilles actually reside. This move is in order for the family to gain some benefit from their heritage. Upon her arrival at the mansion, Tess quickly learns that the family of Tess' "cousin" Alec are not true d'Urbervilles, but rather an opportunistic lot who bought the family name in order to improve their own standing in life. Tess is pulled between what she was sent to accomplish for her family against her general disdain for Alec, who will give her anything she wants in return for sexual favors. The second of these men is Angel Clare, the son of a parson and an apprentice farmer. Angel and Tess fall in love with each other. Tess has to decide if she will divulge to Angel her past relationship with Alec, which if she does may jeopardize their own relationship. But if she doesn't, Tess also has to figure out if the secret will haunt her and thus jeopardize their relationship in other ways.—Huggo

When John takes his San Francisco friends to his deceased uncle's ranch to hunt wild boar, it seems like a typical steroid-impaired 'guys' weekend with guns. As the young men trek deeper into the woods, they begin to realise the awful truth of his uncle's death and the legend of the ripper; a murderous 3000lb boar. Their pursuit takes them through fields of marijuana and into the muddy landscape of big wallow, involving weaponry, the violent Tibbs brothers, tortured animals, a machete-toting hippie, vengeful rednecks, and throat-slitting young women who grow pot by day and worship the giant boar at night. By the time the hunt's over, no one's unscathed. Not for the faint-hearted (or people with an IQ higher than a pebble).

Pig Hunt (2008)

Despite admitting that she was scared of him in her never-ending quest to please him, 35-yearold housewife and mother Alice Hyatt is devastated when her husband Donald is killed in an accident. With few job skills except that as a singer, Alice, along with her precocious 11-year-old son Tommy, decides to move from their current home in Socorro, New Mexico to her hometown of Monterey, California, the only place she has ever felt happy. She plans on getting singing gigs along the way to earn money to get back to Monterey by the end of the summer and the start of Tommy's school year. Alice's quest for a job at each stop leaves Tommy often to fend for himself. His behavior is fostered by Alice, as their relationship is often more as trouble-making friends than mother and son. Alice's plans often do not end up as she envisions, especially as she is forced to take a waitressing job at Mel and Ruby's Diner in Tucson, Arizona, which entails working with a disparate group, including Mel, the establishment's gruff owner/short-order cook, and her fellow waitresses, the wisecracking, foul-mouthed Flo, and the naive and shy Vera. Alice also falls into old habits, namely relying on men to make her feel fulfilled, specifically the much younger Ben, and farmer David. Those relationships may also provide her with a better perspective on her life and her bad choice of Donald as a husband.—Huggo

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974)

People tell stories. In Toronto, an art historian lectures on Arshile Gorky (1904 -1948), an Armenian painter who lived through the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. A director invites the historian to help him include Gorky's story in a film about the genocide and Turkish assault on the town of Van. The historian's family is under stress: her son is in love with his step-sister, who blames the historian for the death of her father. The daughter wants to revisit her father's death and change that story. An aging customs agent tells his son about his long interview with the historian's son, who has returned from Turkey with canisters of film. All the stories connect.—
