Three men - Deacon, a skeptical religious brother, Gray, an English layman and technology expert, and the stringent Father Mark Amidon - are sent by the Vatican to investigate reports of supernatural activity in an old, recently reopened, thirteenth century church located in the Devon countryside.Upon their first visit to the church, local priest Father Crellick tells them a miracle has taken place, while Gray sets up recording equipment. Crellick shows them footage of objects on the altar mysteriously moving but Deacon remains skeptical. The next day, Mark discovers a hidden side panel but he is disturbed by an unseen force before he can enter. A multi-mic radio setup detects the sound of deep growls and whispers, followed by the sound of an infant crying. Mark pursues a despondent Crellick up the bell tower to the roof; Crellick questions whether he has witnessed a miracle or something far worse - he leaps to his death before a horrified Mark.The inhabitants of the village start to behave with hostility towards the team. Local youths burn a sheep to death outside the men's cottage. The local pub landlord evicts Deacon and Gray from his premises after overhearing the two men discussing local folklore and the credibility of the tenets of old pagan religions versus those of Christianity. Deacon continues to investigate and traces whispers and creaks to a hidden door, inscribed with a pagan vigil he has seen in the diaries of the last minister to serve at the church until it was closed in the 1880s. Behind the door, a set of stairs leads down into darkness, and Deacon is assailed by the sounds of a baby crying and Crellick screaming.Deacon brings in his elderly mentor from the Vatican, exorcist Father Calvino, in an attempt to purify the church grounds. Calvino explains that during the founding of Christianity in England, priests built churches upon the sites of pagan temples. He has evidence that the church is situated on a site - still visible in aerial photographs - of human sacrifices to an unnamed pagan deity.That night, during the exorcism, violent and invisible forces shake the church. Mark is apparently killed and Calvino's eyes bleed before their bodies mysteriously vanish. Deacon traces distant cries to the hidden staircase. As Gray and Deacon descend into a subterranean labyrinth, they find evidence of child sacrifice and realize that the former minister had converted to worshiping the pagan deity. Seemingly spotting Mark, who walks into the darkness heedless of their calls, the pair find Calvino's ornamental crucifix on the floor of one of the tunnels. Following the sound of Mark's voice, they crawl through a narrow, foul-smelling passageway whose exits suddenly contract via a membranous material before the tunnel itself begins to move. The walls begin to secrete a powerful digestive enzyme which horribly burns the two men. As their lights go out, Gray screams in agony and terror while a tormented Deacon recites the Lord's Prayer.

While traveling on vacation to Florida, the college friends Anderson Lee, Cory Jones and Nelson Elliot meet the gorgeous Joey and Kat in a gas station traveling with their gay friend Ricky to the same location. Anderson gives his phone number to Joey in Florida. The teenagers decide to take a shortcut and they find a detour through an old road leading to the Southern town of Pleasant Valley. They are welcomed by the local Mayor Buckman as guests of honor together with Joey, Kat, Ricky and the Afro-American biker Malcolm and his Chinese girlfriend Leah and invited to stay for their Guts and Glory Jubilee with free lodging, meals and booze at Granny Boone's hotel, and dancing, games and a mouth-watering barbecue in the climax of the jubilee. Jeff Jackson, formerly a Boston PD detective now retired on Martha's Vineyard following a career ending injury, is hired by his friend, Chief Madieras of the Vineyard PD, for a one time only security stint at the Pendray Inn, owned and operated by Britt Prajna, the best friend of Dr. Zee Madieras, the island's acting M.E. who happens to be the Chief's daughter and Jeff's childhood friend. The Lakshmi Emeralds, mounted on a sole broach worth $5 million, are being returned to Britt having been stolen from her family over sixty years ago and having circulated on the black market ever since. Gemologist Victor Gaines of Gaines and Associates Auction House in Boston recognized the emeralds after they were brought in by their unsuspecting owners, Regina and Freddy Fields, who were having them appraised. While Britt's godfather, lawyer Willard Gilford, and Gaines personally handled the transfer of the emeralds back to Britt in conjunction with Thornbury Securities, headed by Jeff's former Boston PD associate Mike Vinson, Mike and his team in conjunction with Vineyard PD are handling the event at the Pendray when Britt will be displaying the emeralds for the first time to the Who's Who of the island. One of the more professionally attuned attendees at the event is Rebecca Lane of the Vineyard Art Museum, while reporter AJ Sharma of the Culture of India Magazine is on the island doing a story of the emeralds. One somewhat unwelcome attendee is Britt's cousin, Lloyd Prajna, who plans to contest Britt as the rightful owner, she who plans to display the emeralds by wearing the broach for a week before signing them over to the Smithsonian for the world to enjoy. Shortly after the event, Britt is attacked in her home and seriously injured, while the emeralds end up being stolen from the inn's safe. This incident follows an attempted theft of the emeralds outside the auction house when the transfer was being made. With an occasional lead from Jackie Shawl, an investigative reporter with the Vineyard Gazette who is also writing about the emeralds, Jeff, Zee and the Captain investigate the theft and assault with all of the above as possible suspects. The case takes on a new urgency when Zee has to take on her usual professional role of M.E. as one of the players is found murdered, the signs being that it was associated to the theft of the emeralds.—Huggo
