Sheila Green (Yvonne Romain) is killed in a hit-and-run car accident while walking home from a party one night. A year later, her multi-millionaire husband, Clinton (James Coburn), invites a group of friends (James Mason, Raquel Welch, Dyan Cannon, Richard Benjamin, Joan Hackett, and Ian McShane) to spend a week with him on his yacht. Clinton loves to play elaborate games and he assigns everyone a secret - one is an alcoholic, another an informer and so on - that they are not to share with anyone. Every day for the next six days, they will call into a port where they will be given clues to discover one person's secret. Dennis Pitt, now in young adulthood, has been conditionally released from the psychiatric hospital where he had been institutionalized for an incident that occurred when he was 15. Despite the doctors believing that he is rehabilitated because he no longer suffers from the fantasies that dominated his life, Dennis is still required to check in with his case officer, Morton Azenauer, once a week. Azenauer will do whatever he can to help Dennis survive in the outside world. A year after his release, Dennis violates the conditions of his release by moving without telling Azenauer, thus missing his weekly check-ins. He moves to Winslow, Massachusetts, where he has gotten a job at Sausenfeld Chemical Co. His boss Bud Munsch, the company, and his acquaintances in town are unaware of his history. In not being truly rehabilitated, Dennis believes the company is part of an alien conspiracy to poison the water supply, including openly discharging chemical waste into the lake next to the plant. Dennis spends much of his time gathering photographic evidence to support his belief. He also becomes infatuated with 17-year-old high-school student Sue Ann Stepanek at first sight. In his "investigative" work, Dennis is able to convince Sue Ann that he is a secret agent and co-opts the eager, admiring girl into his investigations as they begin a romantic relationship. But as Sue Ann deals with what she considers her repressed life, she, in her own slightly off-kilter mental state and using her relationship with Dennis, works toward her own agenda, leading to tragic consequences.—Huggo

Tokyo banker Shûkichi Sugiyama's two surviving offspring, adult daughters Takako Numata and Akiko Sugiyama, live with him. He raised them on his own after his wife/their mother Kisako abandoned the family long ago. The father worries about both daughters in different ways. Takako has left her writer/translator husband Yasuo Numata without telling him, and she moves back to her father's home with her and Yasuo's 2-year-old daughter Michiko. Akiko, an English shorthand student who has no recollection of her mother, has been staying out to all hours of the night. Shûkichi and his daughters' Aunt Shigeko believe that sullen Akiko needs a boyfriend to shake her out of her funk, and Auntie starts trying to find her an appropriate suitor. Akiko's family doesn't know that her tie to fellow college student Kenji Kimura is the reason for her uncommunicative sullenness--and why she has secretly been trying to raise ¥5,000. While Shûkichi takes some responsibility for both their problems--he had preferred Numata to Takako's other suitor at the time, who might ultimately have been the better match--he's more disappointed in Akiko than worried about her; he had given her more attention than Takako in their formative years because Akiko never really had a mother. And at just this time, their mother, whom they had presumed was long deceased, reenters their lives, seeming to at least want to have some sort of relationship with them. Kisako's return has a profound effect on both Takako and Akiko, most specifically in how they view the recent goings-on in their own lives.—Huggo
